BMG to publish new book, 'For the Sake of Heaviness: the History of Metal Blade Records'

Metal Blade Records and BMG are proud to announce the upcoming release of 'For the Sake of Heaviness: the History of Metal Blade Records' on August 29th. Written by label founder and CEO Brian Slagel with Mark Eglinton, the book features a foreword by Metallica's Lars Ulrich and celebrates the storied label's 35th anniversary.

Slagel comments: "I have been asked many times about doing a book about the history of Metal Blade and it just seemed like a cool thing to do to document the 35th anniversary. You never really stop to think about a lot of this stuff, so doing the book is a great way of looking back at how many awesome things have happened to me and Metal Blade. We have had a long relationship with BMG and with their new move in book publishing, it all seemed like perfect timing. Being able to work with their team really made the final decision to actually do the book. I am really happy with the way it came out and I hope everyone out there enjoys it as well!"

'For the Sake of Heaviness' is an inside look at how Slagel built Metal Blade from a one-man operation in his mom's non-air-conditioned garage to the preeminent international home of heavy music that it is today. The book recounts the early beginning of a metal-obsessed Southern California kid who launched a fanzine and landed a record store job, before cobbling together what he assumed would be a one-off compilation of fledgling bands from the L.A. scene. Released in 1982, the Metal Massacre LP included the debut recordings of local groups such as Steeler,Malice, Ratt, and Metallica.

'For the Sake of Heaviness' pulls back the curtain to reveal the definitive look at how Metal Blade began, what they've accomplished, and where they're going. Slagel reveals the early advice he gave that helped guide Motley Crue's career; how he helped Metallica replace their bassist - twice; his detailed work on Thin Lizzy and Alice Cooper re-issues; his behind-the-scenes role in the careers of Slayer, GWAR, Mother Love Bone, Alice in Chains, Faith No More, Goo Goo Dolls, and Lamb of God; and his unlikely ventures with kindred metal heads - from hockey star Ken Baumgartner, to celebrity chef Chris Santos, to The Howard Stern Show's Richard Christy, to comedians Jim Florentine, Don Jamieson and Jim Breuer.

Stay tuned for more details, and pre-order options, coming soon!

Joe Bonamassa `Live at Carnegie Hall’ DVD Review

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? That is a question that’s been on the lips of many a musician. It’s a historic venue in the heart of Manhattan, and a venue that has held some absolute memorable moments not just in music history but also it includes Suffragette speeches in 1908, through to the premiere of Charlie Chaplin’s film `The Kid’ in 1921 and The Beatles in 1964.

For Joe Bonamassa, his already extensive list of played venues is as long as it is illustrious, yet one venue that eluded him was Carnegie Hall. The bonus content on this DVD, Joe explains that from boyhood dream Carnegie Hall was the last one on his bucket list and precisely why it wasn’t his usual foray with electric instruments.

To the main feature, the way the stage is set up and presence of the band is almost homely like Joe’s playing in your living room or at the end of the most picturesque pub nestled somewhere a village of equal beauty straight away Joe invites you in.

The inclusion of such an outstanding group of individuals is quite astonishing, although that’s not saying due to their quality but the fact Joe can transpose what would be a rip roaring electric blues set to an acoustic one and have many elements of world music is a huge credit to each individual member bringing in their stamp on this illustrious evening.

Before we mention particular songs, draw your attention to the guitars on stage, mostly Gibson’s and most being at least 100 years old or there around, so in the grand scheme of things the blues should be played on these old beauties something that I’m sure the likes of Robert Johnson would have only dreamed of.

Opening the show with `This Train` it’s a very upbeat rendition of the electric driven piece, although the crowd haven’t started bouncing on their chairs, it’s definitely the right track and right mood to get them ready for an hour and half of a musical extravaganza.

Although on `Drive`, Joe and company bring that ecstatic feeling down to earth with the adding a far more sombre tone that blues music does replicate, although some may assume that the blues can be all like `Drive` yet the Blues is very expressive and these two songs are perfect examples of that.

One aspect of `Live at Carnegie Hall’ and one that’s very much part of Joe’s sound is the use of world instruments and on this occasion Joe’s band consists of Egyptian, Australian, of course American and Chinese members, each adding in an extra ingredient to serve the song.

Joe is relentless with releases, with some who churn out so many albums so quickly, it can become tiresome yet with Joe his unique vision 99% of the time will result in watching something or listening to an album that’s pretty darn special. He won’t just put out a live album of `Live at?’ if it doesn’t have any resonance with himself or his audience. Definitely with `Live at Carnegie Hall’, you get that sense of true accomplishment that he’s doing something he loves and wants you to come along for the ride.

9/10- Joe’s last venue on his bucket list, warm and inviting, its Joe B to a T.

Decapitated `Anticult’ Review

Death Metal is a worldwide entity; it ranges from the US through to Sweden, all across Europe and as far into the Middle East.

As the world got smaller, Death Metal spread and Poland has really became a powerhouse of the scene, along with Behemoth and Vader, Decapitated are very much one of the horsemen of the scene. Formed in 96, they’ve gone through quite something, a tragic car accident in 2007 that claimed the life of a founding member. It’s was certainly a tribute that the band was reformed in 2011.

`Anticult` is Decapitated 3rd album in 6 years, it opens with `Impulse’ and above all, this is a perfect indicator of `Anticult` overall resonance, its extreme metal with so much more added to the witches brew. With cleaner guitar parts to set the mood, the track then opens up with a heavy groovy riff that’s akin to Meshuggah with its downright precise intensity. At just over 6 minutes this track personifies just how Decapitated can take elements from other spheres in metal and apply it to extreme metal and not just make it 6 minutes of pure blast beats.

Song 2 is `Deathvaluation’ and it carries on from its predecessor in it’s particularly groove mentality, especially within the guitar solo. It’s fast, there’s a hell of a lot of widdley in there but more importantly ultimately it’s very memorable and certainly one that people will try, although expect some bleeding fingers to attempt it note for note. It appears that Decapitated has an adage of thrash into their niche and with this solo they pay homage to their heroes of Exodus or Testament, melodic, aggressive but certainly memorable is the order of the day for Decapitated on `Deathvaluation’

The two singles `Earth Scar’ and `Never’ are much later on in the album structure, yet listening to them and how they are laid out and within the record ultimately you really get a superb taster of the rest of the songs on the 8 track extreme opus, clinically aggressive, fast and with a heap of atmosphere.

One aspect of listening to an album is the way in which it flows. Now in this day and age, an album is merely a collection of singles readymade for a quick listen or as part of a shuffle playlist, so listening through `Anticult’ from start to finish it flows well, each track seamlessly into its successor and doesn’t feel disjointed or any point like they just slapped a song where they felt like. Honestly, it feels like they took the time to really set this up, strange to think that an extreme metal album could be a harmonious affair.

If you love extreme metal with added thought, flow, groove, speed and intensity then ultimately this should be your new favourite album. Poland seems to be churning out some real blasting extreme metal and `Decapitated’ are certainly at the forefront with `Anticult’.

9.5/10- The complete extreme metal album, flowing, aggressive

2. Deathvaluation
3. Kill The Cult
4. One Eyed Nation

EPICA announce EP 'The Solace System'; start pre-order; release music video!

With their latest masterpiece, EPICA set new standards. 2016’s The Holographic Principle is the most epochal, multi-layered, courageous and successful record of the band, reaching top 10 chart position entries in the German, Dutch and Swiss album charts. Accordingly, all the tracks written for the album process are high-quality, but not all songs have been put on the album. "This is only based on the fact that the record should not exceed 76 minutes," explains Mark. Since the band didn’t like the idea of a double CD, they finally decided to release an EP with six brand-new numbers, which were created during the creative phase of The Holographic Principle.

Today, EPICA proudly announce their upcoming long-awaited EP, The Solace System, scheduled to be released on September 1st, 2017 via Nuclear Blast.

Mark tells about the songs: "The listeners can expect a high-quality EP - with songs that are far too good to use them only as bonus tracks. We wanted to publish these songs together in a context. It is always hard to decide at the end of a recording process which songs will be on the album, because this means that you have to miss some songs with best quality, just because they do not fit quite well into the overall flow of the record or because there are other songs that are more suited to the lyrics".

Check out the video for 'The Solace System', here:

The Solace System was recorded, mixed & mastered by team Joost van den Broek and Jacob Hansen. It was produced by anime-master Davide Cilloni. The stunning artwork is once again by the hand of Stefan Heilemann.

Simone Simons (vocalist) comments on the EP:
"During the early writing process of 'The Holographic Principle' we found out that we were blessed with a huge amount of songs. The songs that didn't fit on our album are now available for you on this special EP! I hope you guys will enjoy these songs as much as we do!"

Pre-order now:
The box set The Holographic Principle – The Ultimate Edition as well as the EP The Solace System are now available for pre-order.

Nuclear Blast will also be re-release two classic albums from EPICA, Design Your Universe and The Divine Conspiracy on vinyl on August 18th. Each album is available in two different colours, the pre-order for which has already started last week.
